MUMBAI, 22 SEPT
The IIT Bombay has started replacing ceiling fans with wall-mounted fans after the recent suicide of second year BTech student Sahil Wakode, sources said.
Sahil, a Department of Energy Science and Engineering student hailing from Maharashtra's Yavatmal district, was found hanging in his hostel room on the Powai campus on Friday, hours after he was allegedly caught using a mobile phone to access ChatGPT during a mid-semester examination.
Wall-mounted fans will be installed in all hostels on the campus and in other utility areas.
The image of wall-mounted fans arriving at the campus has gone viral on social media.
NCP (SP) spokesperson Anish Gavande asked whether replacing ceiling fans with wall-mounted fans could address the of student suicides.
CCTV FOOTAGE
Four days after IIT Bombay student Sahil Wakode ended life, the Mumbai Crime Branch is analysing CCTV footage from the exam hall and hostel, to find the sequence of events.
Officials said CCTV cameras inside the examination hall captured Sahil’s movements before a professor approached him and led him away after he was allegedly caught copying.
Subsequent footage showed Sahil walking across the campus to his hostel room. He was not seen leaving his room thereafter.
An official declined to comment on reports that the CCTV footage shows Doolla questioning Sahil after appearing to see him looking at something in his pocket, before taking him aside.
NO COMPLAINT
IITB Faculty Forum president Dr Rajkumar Pant claimed that Sahil Wakode had not approached the institute's SC/ST cell with any complaint.
His remarks come after allegations by Wakode's family that he was subjected to systematic institutional harassment and caste-based discrimination.
He also stressed that norms clearly forbid cheating at exams. — PTI
